The Adrenaline Junkie’s Guide to Kelowna in the Spring

If you’re going to be in Kelowna, BC this spring and you’re looking for some extreme activities that will get your heart racing, there are a variety of fun and convenient options all across the Okanagan to give you the rush you’re chasing. There are extreme sports and adventures aplenty when the warm weather rolls around, and as an outdoorsman’s paradise, Kelowna has much to explore. Here are just a few great high-octane activities in and around Kelowna that will satisfy your adrenaline craving.

Zipzone in Peachland: Canada’s Highest Zipline is Just Down the Road

Have you ever wanted to cruise down a zipline and laugh at the earthbound mortals below as you soar to new heights? At Zipzone Adventure Park in Peachland, you can enjoy over two kilometres of canyon scenery on six different ziplines. Each zipline offers a completely different experience. For a fast trip straight down the canyon, try the Tunnel Vision zipline, where you’ll discover what flying feels like. Was your childhood dream job that of an astronaut? Attempt the Step Into Space zipline and you’ll get to experience a 100-foot vertical drop. There’s also the T-Rex, the Powerline, the Hang Time and the Dangle-ator, each of which will have you feeling like you can fly. For an added rush, try the Dangle in the Dark adventure where you and three friends fly down the ziplines in the dark of night, with only glow sticks to light your way. If you’re particularly adventurous, sign up for their annual women-only Go Bare in the Air naked ziplining, which raises funds for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation.

WildPlay Elements Park: Not Your Childhood Playground Swings

WildPlay has four locations across British Columbia and one location in the Yukon, each of which offers a slightly different adventure. WildPlay Kelowna on Highway 33 offers three different adventure experiences for children and adults. WildPlay offers a 25 percent discount to schools and youth groups, and has a birthday package that will accommodate 10 children for $19.50 per person. There are also walking trails to explore and picnic tables for meals, in addition to a private event space. Your children will love the Monkido Aerial Adventure, which has games, ziplines and obstacle courses suspended in treetops up to 18 metres above the ground. Groups of 10 or more people save 10 percent, so grab some friends and explore the elements at WildPlay.

Gillard Trail Puts the “Mountain” in Mountain Biking

Situated in South Kelowna just below the Kettle Valley Rail Bed, the Gillard Forestry Service Road is the start of a renowned system of mountain biking trails that adrenaline junkies love. This area consists of fifteen different trails that feature rough terrain, rocks, bridges, jumps and more. These intermediate and expert-level trails also offer great views of the nearby Bellevue Canyon, and with paths crisscrossing every which way, you can hit as many different trails as you want. Descending the mountain can take as little as half an hour (if you hustle) to two hours or more, depending on which route you choose. You can find a map of the Gillard Trail system at most Kelowna bicycle shops. These trails are not for the faint of heart. If you choose to go, you will want to bring a sturdy vehicle, body armour and a full suspension downhill bike.

Kelowna is a wonderful place to live all year round, but the real outdoor fun happens during the spring and summer. There are a variety of great outdoor adventures across the valley, and Gillard Trail, WildPlay and Zipzone are just a few of the available adrenaline-revving options. The next time you want to feel the wind rush through your hair, try one of these top adventure spots that locals can’t get enough of.
